Recognizing the legacy of Martin Luther King

Although T&H Lemont is open for business on January 16, this doesn’t diminish the achievements and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A leader in the civil rights movement for nearly 15 years, one of King’s early accomplishments was overseeing the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955. Less than a decade later, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in combating racial inequality. His work contributed to legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

Posthumous awards include the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977) and the Congressional Gold Medal (2004).
